We’ve all seen the sad and contemptible label of “dog mom” or “dog dad” for those of adult age who like to pretend that their pets are their children. But for this post, I will not be talking about these people.
Instead, this post will deal with actual parents of children who I also label as “dog moms/dads”, or Dog Parents These are the parents who treat their children as if they are pets, instead of those people who treat their pets as if they were children.
There is a large portion of current parents, the vast bulk actually, who do not view their children as actual tiny humans, but instead view them as pets. They want/wanted children for the warm emotions they can bring, and they want/wanted children to get Likes on their precious social media. These parents don’t actually want to be parents though. They don’t want the tough work of caring for their children; correcting and disciplining them, nurturing them, feeding them and all the other adventures and work that responsible and godly parenting brings with it.
These Dog Parents want to behave as owners do with their pets. They want to take them out for 30-60 minutes to some activity, and then be able to ignore their children until it is time to feed them, just as they would with a dog. For example, a responsible dog owner could take their dog to the dog park on a weekend and let them run free for an hour. The dog would have a blast, get their energy out and they can then head home for the day. The dog will likely sleep for a good portion of the rest of the day and will only need attention again when it is feeding time. The dog owner will then take a minute or so to scoop out some dry food or open a can of dog food. They will then be done with feeding their animal and done with most of their needs for the night.
This is how Dog Parents treat their children. For example, today at the community pool, my wife and I saw several sets of Dog Parents who brought their kids (no less than 7 different sets of Dog Parents). They made sure to take a couple pics for their social media pages, and then proceeded to let the kids play in the pool for about an hour on average. They then packed up and went home. From there, these Dog Parents will let their children feed their addiction to electronics while the Dog Parents ignore their children. They will allow them to rot their brains and become zombie vegetables.
Eventually these children will become hungry, but Dog Parents don’t want to work to care for their children. Instead of actually cooking a real meal for their family and sitting together to eat, they will either microwave up some frozen food or run through a drive through. The Dog Parents just want to be done quickly so they can send their kids back to the electronic babysitters and the Dog Parents can be left alone.
Part 2 will come soon….
