The Fifth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary: The Coronation of Mary
Feast Day: August 22nd (Novus Ordo) / May 31st (Latin Mass)
Revelation 19:19 Then God’s Temple in Heaven was opened, and the Ark of His covenant was seen within His Temple; and there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail. 20:1 A great portent appeared in Heaven: a Woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
17 Then the dragon was angry with the Woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her children, those who keep the commandments of God and hold the testimony of Jesus.
This fifth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary highlights the Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven. She is the Queen Mother, and also the mother of all who follow Christ. The Father, Son and Holy Ghost raise up Our Lady above the highest of all creatures, even higher than the angels. She is the greatest of all creatures that God has created. She is forever without stain of sin and perfectly holy through her entire existence. She is the Theotokos (God-bearer) and the Kecharitomene (Full of Grace). She is fully now a “partaker of the divine nature” that is mentioned in 2 Peter 1:4. She is not God, so there is no confusion by any reading this post. She is a finite creature made by God and is not God. She is His highest creation. She is crowned in Heaven with glory given to her by God.
Revelation 19:16 And He hath on His garment, and on His thigh written: KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Psalm 44:10 The queen stood on Thy right hand, in gilded clothing; surrounded with variety.
Psalm 132:8 Arise, O Lord, into Thy resting place: Thou and the Ark, which thou hast sanctified.
1 Kings 2:19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon, to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. The king rose to meet her, and bowed down to her; then he sat on his throne, and had a throne brought for the king’s mother, and she sat on his right. 20 Then she said, “I have one small request to make of you; do not refuse me.” And the king said to her, “Make your request, my mother; for I will not refuse you.”
Our Lord is given the throne of King David, and His Kingdom shall have no end. In the Davidic Kingdom, the queen was not the wife of the king, but his mother. She was the Queen Mother and she had a throne next to her son and sat at his right hand. In Heaven, the Father sits on His throne and the Son sits at the right hand of the Father. Our Lady sits at the right hand of the Son. She is honored and glorified by the Trinity.
Luke 1:26 26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Hail, Full of Grace! The Lord is with thee.” 29 But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a Son, and you will name Him Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His ancestor David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His Kingdom there will be no end.”
Note that Our Lady is confused about this greeting from the angel Gabriel who was sent by God to her. She is a humble and poor human, yet the angle greets her with a royal greeting of “Hail” which was reserved for greeting kings when they returned to their cities. Here an angel of God greets Our Lady as his superior. He then addresses her by the title “Kecharitomene”, which means “she who has been and continues to be perfectly full of grace”. It’s not just a descriptor for Our Lady, but also a title. This title is never used for anyone other than Our Lady in Scripture.
Luke 1:46 And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord. 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48 Because He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 Because He that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is His Name. 50 And His mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear Him. 51 He hath shewed might in His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. 52 He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble. 53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich He hath sent empty away. 54 He hath received Israel His servant, being mindful of His mercy: 55 As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His seed for ever.
All generations shall call her blessed. She is Our Lady and our mother. She is heavenly royalty but loving as well. She longs to pray for us to her Son and bring our petitions to Him, if we would just ask her. She cares for us more than we can even imagine. She has no stain of sin on her soul, and her love for us is pure and undefiled. She will lovingly take your prayers and then beautify them more than you can imagine before bringing them to Our Lord. Her soul magnifies the Lord.
She is also the promise that Christ has given to mankind for when He returns at His Second Coming at the Final Judgment. He promises to raise us up and resurrect our bodies to unite with our souls again. He promises to assume us into Heaven with Him forever if we will just love and obey Him. To show He will keep His promise, He delivered on that promise for Our Lady. He assumed her into Heaven and gave her the crown of Heaven to show that He has all authority in Heaven and on earth, and that He will fulfill His promises to us just as He fulfilled them with Our Lady.
